Year 9 Careers
On the 25th April, fourteen professionals from a diverse range of STEM careers
gave up their time to come into school and talk to Year 9 about their chosen
professions. This included a medical physicist, a chemical engineer, a civil
engineer and a lady who is developing a fungal biofuel with the University of
Nottingham. Small groups of students attended each stall for five minutes to
listen and ask questions before a whistle was blown and the students moved
on to the next stall. A very enjoyable and informative afternoon was had by all.
Robot Revolution
On the 16th June, students from Year 7, 8 and 9 were
selected to take part in the STEM challenge, Robot
Revolution. Students took part in a variety of activities
during the sessions. These included designing and firing
catapults. Here, they looked at the design process,
testing the catapults and reflection on improvements that
they could have made. The students were then given
kit that contained over 120 parts and an instruction
manual. All students taking part successfully built their own
robots. The students in the morning session were that good
the leaders decided to challenge the students further by
providing them with lap-tops and teaching them how to
code their robots. Well done to all involved.

A big thank-you must go to the following students who helped at the
Primary Cross Country held each year at Brookhill Lees School. Evie
Saxton, Callum Frogson, Harriett Cross and Tom Ellis were great ‘hares
and marshalls’ for the morning and all ran smoothly!
Well done to the following students who helped ensure the Larkfields
Infants Sports Day was another success. The students helped on the
stations and were enthusiastic with the youngsters, cheering them on
and encouraging them. The students involved were Jessica Stevenson,
Niamh Shortt, Lauren Wooder, Georgia Flinton, Emma Stevenson,
Thea Dane, Jimi Knowles, Will Moore, Alex Cooke and Akash Dewshi.
Later this term, more of our students will be helping at Mornington and
Hollywell Sports Days; so good luck.
The Broxtowe Athletics Competition took place at Harvey Hadden
Stadium on Thursday 12th May. All our students were a credit to
the school and performed well. Three were able to go through and
represent Broxtowe at the Nottinghamshire event on Saturday 11th
June; these students were Amy Keady, Harry Brown and Billy Watson.
Amy was able to qualify to represent Nottinghamshire in the 300M
hurdles which is to be held in Birmingham on Saturday 18th June; a
fabulous effort by all. The Year 7 team will get their chance to participate
in July when they have their own competiton.
