Electrolytes and Water
There are many conditions that can cause electrolyte imbalances that may not be corrected by
diet alone so always consult your physician if you experience any of the above-mentioned
problems since you could have a serious health issue that needs to be addressed.
Otherwise, starting a ketogenic diet can cause an electrolyte imbalance that can be easily
corrected. Since your fat cells are able to release water and can be flushed out of the body, you
will lose lots of water and electrolytes. Electrolytes are very important to your body because
they are what your cells use to transmit electrical impulses throughout your body and are
essential for normal function of our cells and organs. The most prevalent electrolytes are
potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorine, carbonates, and phosphates.
There are many varying opinions of how much water a person should consume each day. Too
much water can flush out too many electrolytes while too little water can result in dehydration.
Stick to the rule of ½ a fluid ounce per pound of body weight per day and adjust it if necessary.
Don’t forget to count coffee, tea, and other fluids you drink into your water count.
Listen to your body. If you’re thirsty, drink more since your body may need more.
