We live in a high technology world of the 21st century and have become very dependent on computers and modern gadgets of communication . There is this cartoon that shows a family of four , wherein three of them are busy with their iPhone , iPad , and iPod respectively and the head of the family exclaiming “ I paid !”. That more or less sums up how every member of a family today is the owner of some communication device or the other and how wired they are to the virtual world .
The Internet is a technology that provides public accessibility to various tools of communication , such as email , data storage , social websites like Facebook , WhatsApp etc . Sitting in the comfort of our homes , we can connect with the world . The Internet facilitates shopping , paying bills , booking tickets for travel or movies and also online classes . The possibilities
are endless . Initially we start using the internet as a necessity , later it becomes a hobby and slowly it turns into a habit which finally leads to addiction . This Addiction is now being called as ‘ Internet Addiction Disorder ’.
Internet addiction is defined as any online related , compulsive behaviour , which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family , friends and one ’ s work environment . This disorder affects eyes , neck , head and the back . Therefore , we need to be careful about how we use it and how long . Spending more and more time online , experiencing mood swings , feelings of sadness , sleeplessness and depression when away from the internet are all symptoms of Internet Addiction Disorder .
The Internet can be a boon , if it is widely used and bane , if it becomes an addiction . Therefore , let us be very careful and self-controlled .
