SOPHIA, GRADE 11, WORKED ON A COMPUTER SCIENCE PROJECT WITH A CHS ALUMNA WHO IS CURRENTLY COMPLETING HER PHD IN THE UK
How did this experience enhance your understanding of the industry and its practices?
This experience gave me a much better understanding of the world of research in academia. Working on“ research” can sound very broad or open-ended, but in fact there are similar steps in the research process no matter what field it relates to. For example, completing a review of the papers that already exist in your field is essential to gain the necessary background understanding, and outlining a clear method at the start ensures that you have a plan on how to complete your project and helps you stay focused on your end goals. The placement really helped me gain a good grasp of the research process framework and what it entails.
In what ways did working with a CHS alumna help you build valuable connections?
Working with a CHS alumna helped me realize the value of networking with people with whom you have commonalities. While working on our project, we discovered the numerous shared experiences we have from attending CHS, even though we did so at different times, and this helped create a deeper connection. As a result, I gained a lot of insight about my mentor’ s university and professional journey after high school. After getting to know me better, she was also able to provide me with extremely valuable advice based on her journey, but still tailored to my personal situation.
What new skills did you develop during your placement, and how do you see these benefitting your future career?
Two important skills I developed during my placement were adaptability and resilience. Throughout my project, there were multiple occasions where we encountered setbacks and had to change our approach to overcome them, for example, our computers not being able to process the large amount of input data successfully. No matter my future career, thinking creatively to navigate problems will be key in helping me ensure that external factors do not prevent me from achieving my goals.
Concerning hard skills, the Python coding practice and enhanced understanding of computers I got out of this placement will also be very useful, considering we live in a world becoming increasingly dominated by technology and artificial intelligence.
