THE POWER of Childhood

WENDY MACKEN DIRECTOR , JUNIOR SCHOOL
Beginnings hold a profound significance in shaping our journeys . While the first chapter of a captivating book sets the tone for a compelling narrative , childhood , in particular , serves as the foundational chapter of our lives . During these formative years we acquire essential skills , values , and experiences that influence our character and potential . Just as a book ’ s well-crafted introduction paves the way for a meaningful story , a nurturing and enriching childhood ensures a robust start , equipping us to navigate life ’ s complexities and opportunities with confidence and resilience .
As parents and educators , we have the incredible privilege of guiding our children through these formative years and we play a pivotal role in safeguarding the essence of childhood . It is a unique and irreplaceable period that we know is short-lived . MacNamara ( 2016 ) compares our work to that of a gardener , discovering the best conditions for our children to flourish .
At Crofton House , we understand the significance of childhood . We aim to provide an environment that creates connection , cultivates curiosity , and values a community-minded approach . The School and parents form an important partnership working together to support these three elements , which are essential for our girls to thrive .
CREATING CONNECTION
Meaningful connections and relationships are the foundation for personal growth . Most significantly , positive connections with caring adults are associated with greater emotional regulation , social competence and resilience . At CHS , we view adultstudent connections as a gateway to social and emotional well-being . Every young person should be able to name at least two adults in the school who fulfill this connection for her .
At home , consider this connection with your child . Dr Daniel Amen and Dr Charles Fay , authors of Raising Mentally Strong Kids , suggest we embrace ‘ special time ’, 20 minutes of child-centred time daily with no questions , commands or directions . It ’ s simply time in the relational bank to support attachment , necessary to meaningfully influence your child during these foundational years — and beyond .
CULTIVATING CURIOSITY
Curiosity is the spark that makes us want to know more about the world around us . When we are curious , we discover new things and understand more deeply , broadening our perspective . We know children enter the world curious and it is the social and emotional learning skill most strongly linked with early cognitive development ( OECD , 2021 ). At CHS , careful consideration is given to creating question-rich , inquiry-based learning environments that stimulate and strengthen curiosity , learning with and from each other .
At home , consider the opportunities your child has to embrace curiosity . Unstructured time each day — outside when possible — provides an ideal setting for young people to embrace curiosity . It starts with noticing our surroundings , listening to others , and asking questions .
A COMMUNITY-MINDED APPROACH
A community-minded approach is about thinking beyond ourselves and considering the needs of others . In the Junior School , students make a promise to care for themselves and for others daily . We achieve more when we support each other and celebrate each other ’ s successes . Prioritizing “ we ” instead of “ me ” allows students to learn the value of empathy , cooperation , and social responsibility . as they become compassionate and capable individuals .
At home , consider opportunities to foster community-mindedness . This could include highlighting how actions contribute to the well-being of others and adopting an attitude of gratitude .
Childhood is a magical time filled with wonder , growth , and discovery . Working with families , we are dedicated to preserving childhood and intentionally creating an environment that supports the success of the whole child . By prioritizing connection , cultivating curiosity , and celebrating a community-minded outlook , the School and parents can create the conditions and experiences our girls need to navigate childhood with joy and meaning on this journey of growth and personal best .
