GOLF at CHS
This year saw the start of the golf program at Crofton House and the first Senior School golf team . It was an extremely successful season , ending with the CHS team earning gold at the Provincial Championships .
“ We are very proud of our varsity golf team . The inaugural year was remarkable , thanks to our dedicated athletes and coaches . The CHS players were five of only eight female athletes represented at the Provincial Championships , and our two Grade 12 golfers were impressive mentors to their three Grade 8 teammates . The team played with integrity , poise and sportsmanship through difficult weather and intense competition . I couldn ’ t have imagined a better beginning to our golf program ,” said Ena Harrop , Head of School .
BROADENING OPPORTUNITIES AND CONNECTIONS
The teacher sponsors for the new golf program , Ms Quinn Cumming , Department Head , Physical & Health Education , and Mr Simon Ng , Teacher , Mathematics , Senior School , are excited to share with students the joy and life lessons that golf has given them . To be on a team or to play a round with friends or work colleagues brings the opportunity to build broader connections and deepen friendships .
In many other sports , the participant needs to be the strongest , fastest or tallest athlete to win ; this is not true when playing golf . You don ’ t have to hit the furthest to be a great golfer . Instead , traits like being mentally strong and having a positive attitude mean that anyone can play golf .
“ Compared to other sports , golf is played slower and with more time to make decisions . There ’ s more reasoning and critical thinking . The logical aspect appeals to some of my strengths , as I like to think mathematically and plan things out when I ’ m behind the ball , like calculating yardage and wind , and deciding what club I ’ m going to hit with . I also really enjoy seeing the ball track on a line , and then go into a hole ,” says Michelle , Grade 12 . Next September , Michelle will be playing on the women ’ s golf team for Harvard University .
“ When I go on golf trips , the gender ratio is so obviously male-oriented ; as I am teaching at an all-girls school , I ’ m very sensitive to that kind of visual . I would love to empower students so that they too can plan
