“ I really like the teachers who are responsible for the [ Gender and Sexuality Awareness Club ]. They ’ re just the most supportive adults that I ’ ve ever met . In terms of academic support , I found the English Plus program really helpful ,” Marwa said .
As she progressed at CHS , Marwa found her footing . Overcoming the language barrier was a testament to Marwa ’ s determination and the foundation for her to thrive academically .

“ I ’ ve been taking various sciences , and particularly enjoying math . As we delved into research and challenging topics , I also appreciated the First Peoples ’ class . The issues of Indigenous people were unfamiliar to me , since I had grown up in Afghanistan ,” she said . “ That ’ s something that I want to explore more when I ’ m at university : maybe take one of the elective courses focused on Indigenous issues , because I find them important and interesting to learn about .”
