CELEBRATING COURAGE , CREATIVITY AND CITIZENSHIP
Welcome back to The Ivy , Crofton House School ’ s annual magazine .
As we navigated a gradual and cautious return to a normalcy amid continued COVID-19 , 2021 – 2022 reminded us of the joy of connection and community : the sense of being known and of being part of something bigger than ourselves . It also highlighted the importance of treasuring every moment and not to take anything for granted .
Our year began with news of the Taliban imposing restrictions on women ’ s rights in Afghanistan , including their right to attend school . For CHS , this was a pertinent reminder of our privilege to live and learn in this wonderful space ; there is nothing inevitable about progress , and it is our responsibility to use the opportunities we have to build a brighter , fairer , kinder future beyond these ivy walls .
The first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 , 2021 , provided an additional space to reflect on our place within Canadian history , share resources and create intentional spaces for discussion . This was one of many opportunities our girls had to learn more about Indigenous history and contemporary issues throughout the school year , as we take active steps towards Reconciliation and embed First Peoples ’ principles of learning and knowledge within our programming — several examples of which are shared throughout this publication . In this spirit , we are excited to start developing our own courses on Indigenous knowledge in the Senior School to meet the new graduation requirements : courses that will be meaningfully grounded in our School ’ s vision and mission .
Through school-wide programs like a reimagined Ivy Compass and our campuswide focus on social and emotional learning , our girls continued to meaningfully situate themselves within the world , establish their sense of self and define their unique role in our community , all in a current context of significant uncertainty and unfolding historical events . I am inspired by how the students have explored their creativity , courage and citizenship this year and brought their voices into discussions about the School ’ s future .
Going forward , the new strategic plan will reflect our dedication to purposeful learning and to education as a social good that benefits the community . This new plan commits to belonging , responsibility and agility , and it includes the critical input and engagement from our staff , students , parents , alumnae and the larger community .
As we look to a new year filled with possibilities , where the School will be celebrating its 125th birthday , we hope this edition of The Ivy provides you with a glimpse of the strides made in 2021 – 2022 and the distinctive culture we continue to foster here at CHS .
The Ivy is a community magazine that connects parents , students , staff , alumnae and friends of Crofton House School . It builds on the legacy of The Ivy Leaf , Crofton House School ’ s alumnae publication that was produced from 1987 until 2009 .
The magazine , now in its second year of production , aims to capture school events , voices , news and happenings that can be shared with our entire community through words and photos . It is produced on 100 % recycled paper .
