BE YOURSELF!

By Laura Amongero

The song that I’m going to write about is ‘the’ song…

The song I love is Hair, by Lady Gaga. She is both the composer and the singer. Hair belongs to ‘Born this way’, her last CD album. It is a song that makes you think carefully about so many things!

Hair talks about freedom and equality, no matter who you are, what you like, what you wear. This stanza is a clear example of this:

‘I just wanna be myself,

And I want you to love me for who I am.

I just wanna be myself,

And I want you to know, I am my hair’.

This song says that we are all as free as our hair; this is clearly a metaphor since there is a comparison between human beings and hair. We all know that hair is free as long as you don’t apply hairspray to it. If free, it will always go its own direction. This song is against all kinds of prejudice. There’s a stanza in which Lady Gaga asks not to be judged:

‘I just want to be free, I just want to be me

And I want lots of friends that invite me to their parties.

I don't want to change, and I don't want to be ashamed.

I'm the spirit of my hair, it's all the glory that I bear.’

The first time I listened to this song, I got goose bumps. Fortunately, I also had the opportunity to listen to it live at Lady Gaga’s concert in Buenos Aires last year. When she sang Hair, I cried. I really did, because it is an emotive song.

Lady Gaga’s image goes with this song. She is an eccentric pop star, she has always been eccentric and her aim is to build self-confidence in those that often feel embarrassed for being different.

I do recommend all of you to listen to it at least once. Why don’t you give it a try? You won’t regret it!
