12 The Fulton Street Project The Neighborhood The area has “emerged as a hotspot for arts and culture” in Brooklyn, and is a growing creative community that attracts artisans and artists. This mix of hipster and hip-hop culture has captured New York City’s imagination. In 2013 the neighborhood was declared “the new Williamsburg,” with its eateries and bars called the hippest spots in Brooklyn, and young,”yarn bombing” residents installed crocheted art installations on its landmarks. The New York Times Fashion blog calls the area’s convergence of styles “an inspiring mash-up of vintage, hip-hop and hipster motifs.” Neighborhood gentrification is inevitable and is moving quickly. Our goal with the Fulton Street Project is to bring the neighborhood together on an artisanal plane with local artist, designers, restauranteurs, and entrepreneurs developing their businesses on this strip of Fulton Street.
