leprosarium had its own rules
and regulations, schools, places
of worship, social clubs, fire
brigade, police force, burial
ground and a prison too. At
one time, it even had its own
currency.
With improvements in the
treatment of leprosy and the
dwindling number of patients,
the centre was turned into a
research centre for leprosy
sometime ago. Now, the former
Sungai Buloh leprosy centre
is better known for the sale of
flowers and plants rather than
with leprosy, as many commercial
nurseries thrive there.
Moving around
the
old leper settlement area
resembles a journey in history
where many of the old buildings
and facilities are still operative
with old inmates hanging around
leisurely at the Mutual Aid
Association and coffee shop.

The high pitched roof quarters for lepers offered a cool environment and relatively comfortable living
space.
