Family Structure

The Industrial Revolution was the start of machinery doing work that man usually would have. By the Industrial Revolution most Americans were unemployed in agricultural occupations and worked with some kind of skilled art, but in this time period not only men, but women and children could work in factories. All people could work in factories because of the economic growth in the United States. Because there were more people, manufactured goods became a larger priority. Before the Revolution, many families worked and lived on farms or in small towns. The father and oldest kids would tend to the farm while the mother would take care of the family. When the Industrial Revolution came around women and children would be hired because they were cheaper than men. Families allowed their children to work in factories because it raised the family's yearly income. Women often worked in mills and or mines as well. Most children of this time did not get an education, children could start working in factories in ages as young as four. With the family being so busy, it became harder to communicate and spend time as a family because most people focused on their individuality rather than their family as a whole.
