my platform of choice. Whatever you do, become part of a community and take the time to help others. If you’ve created a game,
have already run a bazillion playtests (including blind ones), and
are confident about the quality, run the numbers. If you can create
a Kickstarter campaign that will let you end up in the black when
you’re successful, just do it! It doesn’t matter whether you’re successful or not, you either are and that’s great, or you’re not and
you’ve learned how to become successful the next time around.
IGM: These next couple questions are for Dan: Both you and
Aerjen are indie devs yourselves. Can you tell me a little bit about
your project in development, Children of Liberty?
DS: It’s flying to the finish line. There’s been so much progress on
it in 2014 it’s tough to keep up! We recorded over three and a half
hours worth of voiceover with the most amazing cast (starring our
keynotes Sarah Elmaleh and Ashly Burch no less). We launched
the game on Steam Early Access on Patriots Day to many thumbs
ups and are coming up on our ninth update!
The team recently took a trip to Salem to capture reference for
some of the levels we’ll be starting to build soon (photo updates
will be available on our Facebook page). Our plan is to keep the
game in Early Access while we build out the content. There are a
lot of revamped features on the way, like a slick new book-style
menu, a hub zone treehouse, challenge rooms, and of course more
levels and the remaining playable characters. The game will be at
Boston FIG, and we’d love to bring it back to PAX East next year
if we can afford it.
[Editor’s Note: Children of Liberty is still in Early Access, and the
game recently received its eleventh update.]
IGM: Your bio on the Lantana Games website says you like to try
new foods. Have you eaten anything exotic lately?
DS: Honestly, I haven’t gotten the chance to expand my tastes
much lately, but whenever somebody asks me this question, I
always like to go back to the time I ate pig’s ear.
