The Indie Game Magazine December 2014 | Issue 44 | Page 6

editorial Happy Holidays! (And Happier Anniversaries!) D ecember 1, 2013. That’s when I first started working at Ye Olde IGM. Things were… a lot different than they are now. Back then, I was just some dumb kid writing about video games. But flash forward 12 months on the dot, and here I am; some dumb kid writing about video games who gets to boss people around. But I have to do a lot more than just fire people when they admit to not loving Ninja Turtles (not the new movie) and Spider-Man (not the new movie… sheesh, what happened to my favorite franchises this year?), there’s also real work involved too. Someone’s gotta pose for the office calendar, after all. But seriously, I think it’s pretty wild how far IGM has come in the past 12 months. I think we’re doing a pretty decent job of helping spotlight the indie games community, and just like I promised way back when I took this job; the more support we get, the more support we can give back. On that note, I just wanted to say thanks for giving IGM the chance to work with so many talented developers to cover just as many fantastic games. 2014 was something truly special, and I hope the community will continue to help us, so we can make 2015 ever better. But enough business talk, I also wanted to welcome everyone to the Holiday issue of IGM! We’re doing things a bit differently this year, and the team decided to include a Holiday Buyer’s guide we hope you’ll take a look at. It’s filled with awesome games, accessories, and gaming-related goodies that should peak the interest of anyone looking for a Holiday gift for the gamer in their life. I’m hoping this issue can be the start of a new Holiday tradition, as I’d like to continue covering more gaming related content. I know it’s politically correct to just say Happy Holidays, but I’ve always been a “Merry Christmas” kind of guy. It’s not about religion or forcing ideas on anybody (I’m not interested in doing so), I just really love the idea of the Christmas spirit. I love that, for some strange, unexplainable reason, the whole country seems to decide for a few weeks to just be more civil towards one another in celebration of the Holidays. As if Santa suits and tired tunes are all it takes to get us to be less selfish for a little while. I’m honestly not sure why so many people are so much more pleasant during the Holidays (it’s downright shocking to see it happen when you work retail. It’s truly a GameStop miracle.), but whatever their personal reasons, it’s nice to see humanity isn’t totally irredeemable, despite what the internet often leads me to believe. In short: Thanks for an amazing year at IGM, and I wish you all a safe and Happy Holiday season! Assuming Krampus doesn’t take me, I’ll talk to you again in 2015.
