EDITORIAL Looking Ahead to Brighter Tomorrows The past eight months have been a wild ride at IGM. I joined the team on December 1st as a community manager. A month later, I was an editor. Two months after that, I took the reigns as Editor-in-Chief. Now, I get to announce yet another title change, one I imagine will be the last one for the foreseeable future: Co-owner. As of late-June, our previous owner decided to step down, and walk away from IGM to pursue other interests. Currently, myself and a colleague by the name of Derrick Dool co-own IGM together. Derrick’s a great guy with awesome programming skills, and he’s already proven to be invaluable during the relatively smooth transition of ownership. I’m happy to be working alongside him as we build up IGM into the incredible force we know it can be for the indie community. Now, I keep saying variations of the word “ownership”, but from here on out that’s not how either of us plan to run IGM. Derrick shares my vision of using IGM as a tool to showcase and support the indie community. With that in mind, IGM is going to be a collaborative effort going forward. Those that know me also know I’m transparent about everything, overworking myself to death to support indies. Now that it‘s my decision to make, I plan to steer IGM in a direction that’s best for the community. (Even better, I actually listen to you guys, and consider your opinions when you talk to me!) To prove that, Derrick and I decided that I will retain complete creative control over the direction of the Magazine. All that said, IGM, and frankly, I personally, need the community’s support now more than ever. There are so many ways I’d like to expand IGM - be it through venue-hosted Game Jams, an annual Indie Con, more site content so we can feature more games, a bigger Magazine, the list goes on - but right now the only checks I can sign would be paid to the amount of “Good Will.” But that‘s where you come in. If you like the direction IGM has been going in since December, and agree that we can positively affect the indie scene, please support us. I can promise that any support we receive will directly funnel back into the indie community. (Being able to pay people a fair wage has a way of increasing productivity, and what‘s left will go to a project budget for fun events that spotlight indies.) I get a lot of emails about how the support of IGM would mean so much to developers, and we’re more than happy to do everything we can. But I think support is a two-way street, and hopefully the rest of the community agrees. To unapologetically steal a slogan: Let’s build something together.
