and researching documentaries are so VERY different. Game makers are like playful engineers. Film makers
are performance centered. These two tribes DO NOT speak the same language, and they DO NOT do things
in the same order. They don’t even have the same priorities! We learned a lot about getting A teams with no
idea about other media to work together. Next time, it’ll be easy. I hope.
IGM: So what was the most difficult part of putting the various pieces of Cloud Chamber together then?
Christian: It was managing several interdependent processes at once. A sudden breakthrough in one area
(the game design, for example) would lead to a change in another area (the film aesthetic, for example). But
that is also the fun part – it’s like spinning plates: You have to keep them all spinning.
IGM: Was there ever any talk of including Augmented Reality tech, or having players travel to real-world
locations?
Christian: No, never. If we get to build a big community around this, it would be a natural thing to start
exploring, though. We can see from the Beta, that the people who really get involved in something like this –
they have a lot in common with each other. It would be wonderful to start doing things together, with them,
bringing them together, in real life.
IGM: Now that this new genre within massively multiplayer gaming has been created, how do you
innovate from here?
Christian: Oh, we’ve only just started on this
kind of gameplay. I’m sure that there’s a shape
in the marble – and if we can juuust remove all
the excess stone, it’ll be perfect. We’ve only just
begun to do that.
Also, I have new stories that I want to tell.
Stories inside the Cloud Chamber universe – and
completely new stories, as well. As I said, making
Cloud Chamber has been the greatest journey of
my life. I can’t wait to start the next one.
IGM: Any final thoughts about the
development of Cloud Chamber, or how the final
product turned out?
Christian: As Chairman Mao said, when they
asked him what he thought of Western Civilization:
“It’s too early to tell.” ;)
