Firing out words as if they were timpani hits, caressing the drums to tear poetry from them. Weaving melodies that coil around your body like rattlesnakes, and creating ambient moments that transport you to unreal places.

Denmark-based Norwegian drummer, singer and actress Øyunn is able to do all this and more, in a personal project that mixes contemporary jazz with rap and alternative pop with absolute mastery.

Born in Norway but now based in Copenhagen, triple-threat singer/rapper/drummer Øyunn (Siv Øyunn

Kjenstad) combines elements of breakbeat, pop, and spoken word rap to create “New Life."

The song is melodic, balanced, and totally unexpected.

Short and sweet, it opens and closes with a contagious chorus that you may or may

not be able to sing along to, depending on your vocal range. The verse lies in the

middle, changing beat with an awareness of rhythm that surely comes

hand-in-hand with the artists skill as a drummer.

The lyrics tell of the difficulties in finding focus as an individual, navigating

complex relationships, and finding new life in the midst of chaos. It's delivered

with an intimacy that feels both personal and relatable, almost as if you're

having a conversation with the artist about her own revelations.

"New Life" comes along with a music video that only further solidifies the

conversational nature of the song, somehow making a parking garage feel like

an intimate setting. It's that kind of energy that satisfies long-time fans, and

leaves new listeners begging for more.

If you like to be thrown for a loop (but with passion), keep an eye out for

Øyunn's debut studio album set to be released on October 31st.
