Yvan Guilini
by Graham Sclater
Whilst his music is not well known in the UK, people across Europe will immediately recognise his timeless instrumental track 'Winter Memories'.
Yvan Guilini's big break came in 1976 when his instrumental, a fusion of jazz and classical sounds, became a worldwide hit. That instrumental was an international hit and in Belgium alone, he sold more than 100,000 singles and more than 50,000 copies of the album of the same name.
He followed that up with an album which contained the tracks, 'Romantica’, ‘Long Time Ago' and 'Jet Fly Me to Japan.'
For his 18th birthday he acquired B-3 Hammond organ and it was that distinctive sound that changed his life. Yvan said, "In Belgium I received two prizes for my music. That was in 1969, the year I came back from my world tour. Together with Dutch Broadcasting Company, I released two LPs that year with popular jazz music and we performed in more than 28 countries."
Yvan Guilini turned his back on music for many years and followed other interests but like all true musicians, playing music was never far away. His daughter recently set up a record label and that was the catalyst for him to rediscover his love of music and he returned to composing and recording. The twelve-track album entitled 'Music Forever' includes his latest single 'Don't Take My Dream Away' and is available now from Game Records on CD and as a download.
I have heard his album and would comment as follows: “Lovers of Yvan’s original music and his clever blend of jazz and classical sounds won’t be disappointed with this haunting piece with the swirling Hammond organ, his first new music for ages.”
