Hello everyone! My name is Carlos Solorzano, and I am known by many as the Desert Drummer. That is a name I took on when I moved to the Arizona desert back in 2006. I am honored to accept the invitation to begin this monthly feature with The Independent Music Show magazine as I will be talking about all things drum and drumming.
My music career began as a kid when I began taking private drum lessons in my hometown of Carson, CA. I began my performing professionally in the Los Angeles music scene around the same time I started to take music classes at El Camino Community College in Torrance, CA. I went on to earn my AA in Music and worked in various settings in the Los Angeles area for 15 years before relocating to the Tucson desert. It was there that I started to work in the working band scene, musical theater as well as session work.
On a creative level I have a passion for orchestrating world rhythms on the drum set and have been doing that in solo performance and Master Class settings. I have also written many original drumming compositions that have been featured on television shows around the world as well as two solo albums. I have also released a drumming book and currently have plans to revamp my You Tube channel to share many of my instructional methods as well as a lot of my new original music. This will be done thanks to the generosity of two grants that I have recently earned from the Arizona Commission on the Arts as well as the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona. I am currently on the artist roster with Soultone Cymbals, Ahead Drumsticks & Percussion Products, Drumdots and Hansenfutz Pedals. I wanted to share my music background before offering my plans with this monthly feature because I have accomplished all that I have
done as an independent
musician Therefore, I am fully
aware of the struggles one
faces not only when they are
working on their own but also doing something that most people have not seen before. This periodical allows me to do my part to feature the talents of drummers who are leaving their musical mark in their musical scenes. Sometimes a band is on the brink of getting somewhere or a musician has a unique presentation that has not been given the right platform to share what they do. I want to do my part to give these artists a chance to be heard.
I also plan to share many of my insights on drumming techniques, my experiences in various musical settings that I think could benefit others on their own musical journey as well as features on smaller drumming companies that have some amazing products that could be a benefit to drummers who have yet to try them. There is so much out there for all of us to know and learn from with the internet being the resource that has been the game changer for all of us.
Please contact me at [email protected] with any feedback or ideas. I am looking forward to meeting a lot of exciting new artists and sharing a lot of great content with all of you.
