Bad Boy Troy's style of songwriting is widely varied on “Standing in the Shadows,” and showcases a broad scope of tones and tempos. The opening track, “Triple X Whiskey” even boasts a surprisingly jazzy melody riff in the country/rockabilly mode. His singing is reminiscent of Jon Bon Jovi’s, and his guitar work is marvellous and unique to him, full of flair and character. His instrumentalists are likewise top-notch, the band respectively featuring Eric Brittingham of Cinderella (bass), Michael Hodges of David Bowie (drums), and Garfield Redden of ESP (drums).
Intuitively, the studio crew for “Standing in the Shadows” is of a similarly high caliber. The LP is produced by Erwin Musper, whose credits include names such as Def Leppard, Scorpions, Van Halen, and a slough of others. Co Engineering was performed by Gregg Pressler, who has worked with Steven Adler, Warrant and Every Mothers Nightmare. Guitars were provided by David Yockey of Sammick/JTR Guitars.
Having been inspired to make music by seeing the Beatles take the stage on the Ed Sullivan Show, “Bad Boy Troy" began a lifelong music career at age six. He cites as his main musical influence, father Sonny Tipton, mentioning others as an afterthought. These secondary inspirations include Jimmie Page, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Farner, Paul Rogers, and Jeff Beck.
Bad Boy Troy has shared the stage opening for scores of titanic rock bands. These legendary names include (but are not limited to) Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Whitesnake, Loverboy, A Flock Of Seagulls, Air Supply, Sammy Hagar, Nitty Gritty Dirt band, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Deep Purple, Savoy Brown, Pablo Cruise, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Kool and the Gang, Ready For The World, Lisa Lisa, The Jets, Roger & Zapp, Starpointe, Steppenwolf, Black Oak Arkansas, David Chastain, and Toronto.
