Working with Electronics

Lately I have been asked about my feelings on the use of electronic drums and drum machines. There was a time when they were not my favorite things to work with because of what they lacked for me at the time. Electronic drums did not have that big sound that comes from an acoustic drum when you hit it while drum machines lacked that commanding presence that comes from working with a live musician.

Over the years I have distanced myself from such feelings because of the benefits as well as the convenience that come from having these tools at my disposal. First, it’s amazing to have the number of sounds at my disposal to track whatever ideas are in my head. Second, the ability to work at all hours of the day without disturbing my family members or neighbors. Finally, like any instrument, they are a tool that can be of great use depending on how one uses them

I got my first drum machine during my college years when I bought a used one from a classmate. At first it was just something to mess around with but as I started to write my own music, I saw the benefits of having this tool available to help get my ideas on tape. Being a drummer, it didn’t take long for me to program the rhythm parts, which allowed me to spend more time tracking the other instruments,

which was very important since I needed more time to get those parts down due to my lack of proficiency.

Years later I would go on to get my first electronic drum set, which I really enjoyed as it gave me a chance to practice at any hour of the day while also giving me a chance to create various drum set sounds that could be tracked both in my home studio as well as other studio settings. Of course, I would also have access to several other sounds and it was amazing what I came up with when I was able to combine them with programmed loops.

Here is what I discovered about using these heavily discussed products:

1. 'The Groove'

2. 'Coloring Songs'

3. 'Hybrid Grooves'
