Wolf Alice summer is in full throes, but unlike what would arguably be regarded as their most summery, festival-driven cuts (‘Play The Greatest Hits’, ‘Giant Peach’), their latest era is being heralded in by slow-burning tracks.
The first sonic re-emergence of the quartet, however, came in the form of May’s ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’ – a delicate offering that doesn’t shy away from breaking out into vocal chaos at its apex, but at its surface is still a softer, more stripped-back Wolf Alice. Oozing a newfound confidence, their upcoming record ‘The Clearing’ is set to be their most electrifying and mature project yet – and the latest offering, ‘The Sofa’ is no different.
With ‘The Sofa’, we see Ellie Rowsell embracing her role as a frontwoman and stepping into the limelight more than on previous records. Vocals at the forefront and drenched in theatrics, instrumentation takes a back seat, allowing the piano-driven ballad to shine.
Raw and honest, Rowsell reflects: “Didn’t make it out to California / Where I thought I might clean the slate”, harking back to ‘Delicious Things’ dreams (“Would you believe I’m in Los Angеles?”). Full of adoration (“I feel kinda lucky right now, I’m not ashamed to say… I love my life”), ‘The Sofa’ is a love letter to simplicity, and appreciating the smaller moments in life – even stagnation (“Feels a little like I’m stuck in Seven Sisters… And maybe that’s OK”).
