ASC Walks – Exploring the Cotswolds by Ann Tooming
Our splendid tradition to take monthly walks in the Cotswolds to explore the area with its beautiful historic landscape ( and pubs !) continued in January . The season started on January the 25th when we walked from Guiting Power to Naunton ( distance 9.5 km , 16 participants ), and afterwards we enjoyed lunch together at The Farmers Arms . On February 15th , we walked around Hailes ( distance 8.1 km , 8 participants ). The rain was pouring and it was quite chilly . So be prepared with the correct equipment as we go out in all weathers . But we were very proud of ourselves as we did it and we didn ’ t melt ! In March , we went for a walk around Burford ( distance 10.3 km , 15 attendees ). Situated in north
CULTURAL VISITS
Oxfordshire , twenty miles west of Oxford , the town is considered the southern gateway to the Cotswolds . With its medieval bridge , old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages , Burford is justifiably called one of the most picturesque towns in England . In April , we had to postpone our walk due to some Covid cases . But it didn ’ t stop us from organising the next one to Bibury , near Cirencester on the 11th of May ( distance 10.5 km , 11 participants ). This trail follows rolling hills , lush pastures and ancient route ways to discover the ingredients that make up the Cotswolds chocolate-box charm . We hope for beautiful weather in the Autumn and lots of participants in the future - everybody is welcome !
Everyman Theatre guided tour – Cheltenham by Theonie Vogopoulou-Georganta
On Friday 20th May , we had a very interesting backstage tour of the Everyman Theatre . 16 ladies of the ASC club got a close-up look at the recently restored auditorium and saw
what a day in the life of a working theatre is like ! The knowledgeable and friendly guides took us on stage , into the wings and showed us the star dressing rooms . We combined our tour with lunch in the director ’ s private lounge !
Exploring Gloucester City by Alice Havelkova
On 22nd March 2022 , spouses of the ARRC Social Club spent a pleasant day in Gloucester . We visited the Museum of Gloucester , located in a Victorian building in the city centre , where we discovered the history of the city . The Archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror , impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Tables Set , the oldest complete backgammon set in the world . We then moved to Beatrix Potter ’ s House of the Tailor of Gloucester to see the world of inspirational writers . A group of enthusiastic volunteers run a charming mini-museum and shop here . We saw the tailor ’ s kitchen , listened to the story and played with the Animated Mice Box . We finished the educational part of our expedition in an Italian restaurant in the docks . Due to the beautiful weather , we enjoyed lunch outside , next to the canal , with a touch of real Italy .
