Postcard from... Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland has come a long way since the dark
days of The Troubles. Belfast is now buzzing, with a
lively pub and restaurant scene and, as it’s a small
place (or ‘wee’, as we say there), you really can do
countryside, coast and mountains in a day, and still
have time for the Bushmills Distillery!
While it may be wee, it’s also famous for its ‘Big Country’
attractions. You’ve probably heard of the Giant’s Causeway,
but did you know Northern Ireland also has the biggest
inland lake in the UK? Lough Neagh is home to the largest
wild eel fishery in Europe. So there you go.
Northern Ireland has also become a favourite location
for films and TV series, like Game of Thrones, and we do
actually have a place called Holywood. Though the
closest it comes to Tinsel Town is it’s where the actor
Other things worth noting:
• The Titanic was built in Belfast, and there’s now a very
impressive museum by the docks that’s shaped like the
bow of the ship.
• An Ulster Fry basically means anything that can be fried,
will be fried.
• Veda bread is delicious, but egg and onion sandwiches
are not (just my opinion...).
• If someone says ‘the craic’s great!’ don’t be alarmed,
they’re simply saying there’s a great atmosphere.
• And, as the song goes, the Mountains of Mourne really do
sweep down to the sea.
