GYM REFURBISHMENT

2021 has been off to a busy start in the Station Gymnasium with the construction and refurbishment of the Gym Floor , fixed wall equipment and the outflow of old physical training equipment , as well as the inflow of up-to-date machines fit for the future Soldier Athlete .
Refurbishment is set to be completed the middle of Mar 21 with elements of the new equipment arriving in Apr 21 . WO2 ( QMSI ) Hughes has stated that the gym will be the envy of many civilian counterparts and will be one of the biggest strength and conditioning facilities in Gloucestershire with the new Olympic lifting flooring installed .
WO2 ( QMSI ) Hughes has emphasised the fact that currently the gym is still open over the lockdown period unlike other gyms in the Service with the same timings as before ( 0600-2000hrs Mon-Fri ). However , Mar 21 will see the installation of a new key FOB system that will require service personnel to be re-inducted into the gymnasium in order to gain a FOB for out of hours use , more details on this can be sought from the PT Staff in the gym as the policy progresses .

SPORTS SHORTS

Dominating air and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
U . S . Army Sergeant 1st Class Syriah Leno heads straight to the mats after her duties as airspace manager for the Allied Rapid React Corps ’ Air Operations Coordination Centre , or at least she used to before COVID .
During this lockdown , Leno ’ s had to restructure her training , like the entire world has , and said she misses training with her teammates .
“ There is a unique camaraderie amongst the men and women you train with , much like the armed forces ,” she said .
Leno , who recently promoted as the top pick in her profession to the ranks of senior non-commissioned officers , has many achievements , but her journey that started five years ago wasn ’ t easy .
“ I went through adversity that took away my security and self-confidence ,” said the 27-yearold from Colorado . “ After reading Ronda Rousey ’ s autobiography , I was influenced to step out of my comfort zone and learn how to stand up for myself . It was the best decision I have ever made , and I urge everyone to try it .”
In 2018 she became a certified head coach through the United Kingdom Jiu Jitsu Association and was able to host trainings on Imjin Barracks . She said she cherishes the friendships she ’ s made and the opportunities to train with the British Army Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association , along with some world champions , including Roger Gracie and Rodrigo Medeiros .
During the COVID pandemic she maintains fitness through weight lifting in her garden , isolation exercises and yoga ; and practices jiu jitsu movements to maintain fluidity and coordination . “ Can ’ t wait to get back on the mats and get to work ,” she said .
Mental Health Tips from the QMSI PT
While all Military Sport and Adventurous Training is impacted with COVID restrictions , it ’ s hard to goal set when it comes to Physical Training however , the hardest part of doing any PT is getting your trainers on , getting out the door in the cold and doing something over nothing . The mindset underpins the ability to complete the task in hand and exercise can help all round mental health .
Consider the following tips to help you focus and control your mind and behaviours :
• See problems as short terms
• Put things in perspective
• Find a purpose / meaning / goal
• Sleep better . Get into a sleeping habit and try sleep the same time each evening as much as possible
• Always aim to put things into perspective
• Practice a positive attitude , positivity breeds positivity
• Ease a busy mind with a mundane task for example ironing or cleaning
• Ask for help if you need it
