Tell us a bit about your musical background? When did you know that you wanted to be a singer?
My musical background really started when I learned the violin in fifth grade. I have played ever since and really loved it. However when I was 14 or 15 I taught myself the guitar, and began to write songs based off any sort of thing I was going through.
I'd always been told I was a nice storyteller, so it was really great to see my passion for that fall into music, because now music is my life.
I had never considered myself a singer really until people started to take notice of my songs. That's when I started to learn how to craft my voice to bring my stories to life.
Originally from Amarillo in Texas but now living in L.A. Do you still have connections in Texas?
I keep in contact with a few people from my hometown, and some of my family lives there, but other than that I don't have any connections in Texas!
All of my friends that have graduated moved on to amazing cities or colleges.
What musical influences do you have?
Any sort of story teller really influences me. Bands or singer songwriters that are just clever with their words and know how to bring someone into the song. Some bands that I draw influence from would be Daughter, Ben Howard, Twenty One Pilots, and Sufjan Stevens.
What inspires you to write?
What inspires me to write is when I witness something in my life, either a personal experience or a commentary on something going on in our society nowadays, and I react to it and sculpt it into poetry. I like to be concise, while still saying a lot.
What comes first the music or the lyrics?
I think it's different for everyone, but music definitely comes to me first. Sometimes I'll have a lot of little tid bits of song ideas before I even craft one of them into a finished song.
What CD’s do you currently have and where can your music be purchased?
My debut self titled EP is coming out officially August 28, 2015, however my first single "Chariot" off the EP is available now on iTunes.
L.A has to be the entertainment of the USA, how hard is it to fit in the music scene there?
It can be difficult sometimes, but it is nice once you find your community here in LA to fit into the music scene.
I feel like every artist has something to say, and it's so personal to display their work and everyone writes differently, so I love that there is such a wide array of talent here in LA.
What is the hardest thing about being an independent musician?
I think the hardest thing is just getting your name out there. Getting people to hear your music and like it objectively, not just because they're your friend or relative. True supporters.
Are you still studying? If so how do you juggle your studies and your musical career?
I just graduated high school with no plan to continue on in college in the fall, because I want to focus more on my career and spending my time wisely doing what I love. However I've completed my freshman year of college already, so if I ever do go back to school I'll have some foothold!
