 MATHEMATICS
 GROUP FIVE
There are two parallel Mathematics courses, both of which are available at Standard Level( SL) and Higher Level( HL).
Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches This course is designed for students who enjoy the abstract nature of Mathematics and realise the thrill of problem solving and generalisation. Higher Level comprises a core syllabus including work on advanced calculus, proof and complex numbers.
The Standard Level course is a subset of the Higher course with a reduced specification but to a similar standard.
It is aimed at students who wish to pursue further studies with a substantial mathematical content such as Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or Engineering for example.
Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations This course is intended for students with an interest in using Mathematics to describe and solve practical problems. It will suit students interested in using technology and constructing mathematical models that can be applied to practical contexts.
The Higher Level course includes topics such as correlation, numerical integration, modelling, coupled differential equations, Markov chains and graph theory. The Standard Level course is a subset of the Higher course with a reduced specification but to a similar standard. It is aimed at students who will go on to study subjects such as Economics or other social sciences, Business and Psychology for example.
All courses include an internal assessment that will allow students time to engage and understand the ideas, concepts and applications they are studying, as well as learning important investigational and modelling techniques.
Standard Level students across both subjects will complete two externally assessed written papers. Higher Level students will complete three papers, one of which is based on problem solving.
