Urban Environments( HL and SL) Topics include patterns of wealth and deprivation, megacities, microclimate, contested land use change, patterns of crime, resilient city / eco-city and smart city design.
Extreme Environments( HL only) Topics include: the characteristics of cold and high-altitude and hot, arid environments, physical processes creating unique landscapes, opportunities and challenges for agriculture, mineral extraction and tourism, desertification, resource access competition and new technology and sustainable development.
Global Interactions( HL only) Topics include: global superpowers, powerful organisations and global groups, global networks and flows, TNC strategies and supply chains, shrinking world technologies, human development, social entrepreneurship, cultural diversity and diasporas, resistance to global interactions, the role of civil society, threats to individuals and businesses, disruptive technologies, transboundary pollution, strategies to build resilience.
Fieldwork enquiry plays an important role in the study of Geography. This includes a short residential trip to the south Devon coast to complete the internal assessment. There is also a ten-day awe and wonder trip to Morocco( Marrakech, Essaouri coast, High Atlas mountains and Sahara desert fringe) during the Easter holiday.
