LITERATURE AND PERFORMANCE
( Standard Level only)
As an alternative to Standard Level English, this course combines the study of Literature with aspects of Theatre. It suits students who wish to combine English with Drama or who are interested in the study of literary texts from a performance perspective.
Lessons involve a mixture of conventional literary study and performance work, with emphasis on the potential and actual interrelationship between the two. No prior experience of Drama is required.
As well as exploring practical approaches to performance, students study a minimum of five texts from a range of genres, including Shakespeare. or prose text studied in class, together with an oral presentation explaining, justifying and evaluating the performance.
One third of the course, in which students compare two literary works, is exactly the same as Standard Level Literature.
Literature and Performance offers a creative alternative to the Literature syllabus, while enjoying the same prestige and status with both the IB and universities.
The course can be taken alongside Theatre.
There is one externally assessed coursework essay, based on the student’ s own performance of extracts from a Shakespeare play, combining literary with theatrical analysis.
