GROUP SIX

The IB programme in Music is designed to promote greater awareness and understanding of both the power and variety of musical experiences for those who have a general interest , as well as for those intending to continue their study of music further . Candidates are exposed to a broad spectrum of music , ranging from that of Western traditions to that of non-Western regions and cultures .
The Music department ’ s busy programme of concerts in school and of concert trips outside will complement performance and listening opportunities during the course and aim to promote the importance of the living aspect of music in all styles . It is therefore essential that candidates opting for music are prepared to throw themselves wholeheartedly into the activities which the department lay on . These include the school Choral Society and an ensemble appropriate to the candidate ’ s musical ability .
At Higher and Standard Levels the creative , practical aspects of musical experience are balanced with the more theoretical and academic .
The syllabus requires candidates to engage in music on a personal , local and global level . This way they may go deeper into music with which they are familiar but are also required to extend their knowledge and engage with areas that are new to them but will have contemporary significance .
The syllabus is split into four areas of inquiry . AOI 1 socio-cultural and political expression in music . AOI 2 music for listening and performance . AOI 3 music for dramatic impact , movement and entertainment . AOI 4 music technology in the electronic and digital age .
Within these four areas staff work with students to study music and submit evidence of their progress during the course . This is done through submitting work under the following four headings ( three only required for SL ). l
Exploring music in context , culminating in a 2400 word report . l Experimenting in music , culminating in a 1200 word report as well as a submission of recorded audio evidence of creating and performing . l Presenting music , culminating in performances and compositions / creative activities , brought to life by a 600 word programme note . l The Contemporary Music Maker , which is a two- year collaborative project on an area of the candidate ’ s choice culminating in a 15-minute video compilation presenting the candidate ’ s work over two years . This unit is only available to HL students .
