Red Dog Mine : What happens next ?
Teck is currently evaluating the potential of two deposits , Aktigiruq and Anarraaq , located on Alaska state lands . The primary goal is to better define the mineral resource potential of the Aktigiruq deposits . This effort requires extensive exploration , geological and engineering studies to assess both financial and technical viability . While a decision on the new mine is years off , work must continue now to evaluate the viability . With only eight years remaining until the anticipated depletion of the Aqqaluk deposit , maintaining progress is essential to avoid a production gap at Red Dog Mine .
A significant milestone in this effort was recently achieved with the approval of Teck ’ s Section 404 permit application by the U . S . Army Corps of Engineers ( Corps ) after months of delays . This permit allows construction to start on a critical access road , which began in December . The road is essential for supporting exploration efforts at the Aktigiruq deposit , a key step in determining its economic viability and ensuring the continued operation of Red Dog Mine beyond 2031 .
The Aktigiruq and Anarraaq are located several thousand feet underground , which differs significantly in scale and operational approach from Red Dog ’ s current open-pit structure . Additionally , the anticipated reduction in 7 ( i ) revenue sharing is a key consideration , as mining on state lands rather than ANCSA lands changes the revenue structure to other ANCs through 7i / 7j . Concurrent with exploration , Red Dog has initiated the reclamation planning process with an end-of-mine life target of 2031 . An updated reclamation and closure plan is due in 2026 required by the state as part of the five-year regulatory update .
The approval of the Section 404 permit reflects the collaborative efforts between NANA , Teck , regional stakeholders , and regulatory authorities to explore a path beyond 2031 . This summary underscores the need for ongoing dialogue and
planning to address the economic and employment impacts that may arise as Red Dog Mine transitions into the next phase , whether through closure or an extension of mine life .
Preserving our traditions : Responsible tuttu hunting for a sustainable future
Caribou provide more than just a hunt – they sustain us in body and spirit . The meat feeds our families , the traditions strengthen our bond to the land , and the connection to our heritage keeps our culture alive . Practicing responsible hunting is more important than ever to ensure the sustainability of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd and the health of our wildlife populations . Responsible hunting practices help protect these vital resources for future generations .
By following these simple yet impactful practices , we can uphold our traditions and demonstrate respect for our land , wildlife , and community . Together , let ’ s ensure a bright future for our shared resources and way of life .
Know the difference between cows and bulls
Understanding the distinction between cows ( females ) and bulls ( males ) is crucial for the future of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd . Cows are the cornerstone of population growth and safeguarding them supports the long-term health of the herd . Protecting cows today ensures there will be caribou for tomorrow ’ s hunters .
New tuttu bag limit for game management unit ( GMU ) 23
Before heading out , it ’ s crucial to stay informed about the latest hunting regulations , including updates specific to GMU 23 . The new bag limit allows for the harvest of up to 15 caribou per year , but only one may be a cow . Being aware of these rules helps ensure compliance , promotes ethical hunting practices , and supports the long-term health of our wildlife populations .
