This milestone highlights Akima ’ s dedication to strengthening NANA and to remaining a reliable , lasting asset for our shareholders . From the company ’ s early years to now , each success has paved the way for future accomplishments , furthering Akima ’ s mission to serve customers , shareholders , and employees .
Akima ’ s history in federal contracting
Akima traces its roots back to NANA ’ s first significant government contract at West Point Military Academy in 1995 . Just eight years later , Akima Management Services ( AMS ) was formed under NANA Development Corporation to meet the growing needs of federal clients .
In 2012 , four NANA subsidiaries – Akmaaq , Qivliq , KPSG , and AMS – united to form Akima , which means “ to win ” in Iñupiatun . As the company expanded and grew , Akima won bigger contracts and competed against larger contracting companies . By 2019 , Akima had established a new headquarters in Herndon , Virginia , and maintained successful offices across the country .
In the early 2020s , Akima secured a strong reputation as an employer of choice and a provider of exceptional customer service . In 2023 , the company acquired Pinnacle Solutions , expanding capabilities and market reach . During the same period , Akima surpassed the 10,000-employee mark .
In 2024 , Akima companies were awarded several major contracts , including :
• A $ 563 million Redstone Arsenal contract ( won by Akima Facilities Operations ) to support the U . S . Army Contracting Command in Huntsville , Alabama
• A $ 480 million IDIQ U . S . Space Force contract ( won by Five Rivers Analytics ) to maintain a global satellite communication network
• A $ 750 million Communications and Enterprise IT Support Services IDIQ contract ( won by Akima Global Technology ) to support the U . S . Air Force
These and other successes keep the company on track to meet the NANA Board of Director ' s goal to reach $ 5 billion in revenue by 2032 – an objective of growing importance as NANA prepares for the anticipated closure of the Red Dog Mine .
Akima employees supporting the NANA region
Over the years , Akima has introduced and supported various initiatives to benefit NANA shareholders . In 2005 , Akima launched their annual summer shareholder internship program , which provides critical experience to shareholders seeking exposure to a wide array of business operations in a professional environment . To date , more than 200 shareholder students have completed this program , with more than 20 % accepting employment at Akima after graduation . In 2006 , the company joined a partnership that later became the BWISE program , which introduces business topics to schools throughout the NANA region . This program helps prepare NANA youth for successful careers .
Today , Akima continues to support youth development in the NANA region through BWISE , conducting regional visits , and offering internship opportunities . In more recent years , Akima has grown its support of our shareholders through an annual fundraiser that benefits important causes in the NANA region , as well as sponsorships and donations to causes that help people in Northwest Alaska . A yearly Shareholder Awareness Month encourages all employees to better understand and embrace Akima ’ s broader mission and purpose of supporting the people of the NANA region .
Akima ’ s ongoing growth and steadfast commitment to serving NANA shareholders are driven by the dedication , expertise , and teamwork of its employees – ensuring that shareholder interests remain at the center of the company ’ s success .
