Red Dog Mine ’ s Port Rehabilitation in Progress

This summer NANA Construction continues the port Concentrate Storage Building One rehabilitation project at Red Dog Mine . The two concentrate buildings at the Red Dog Port store the zinc and lead concentrates over the winter months until the 100- day shipping window from July to October each year . The project currently supports 60 full-time positions to staff 24-hour operations throughout the summer .

NANA Construction recently received recognition from Teck for their efforts in safely completing training and the installation of the roof incline scaffolding system , a critical component of the project .

Natural Resources Q & A Corner

NANA often receives questions from shareholders about Red Dog Mine and mineral development . Here are a few commonly asked questions and answers about NANA ’ s natural resources .

How does Red Dog Mine give back to the region ?
Red Dog is more than just a mine — it ’ s an economic catalyst and mechanism for self-determination for northwest Alaska . NANA shareholders , the region and the state receive direct and meaningful revenue from development at the mine .
Since the start of production in 1989 , more than $ 269 million has been paid to the Northwest Arctic Borough ( NAB ) for payment in lieu of taxes . The agreement between Teck and NAB includes a separate village improvement fund ( VIF ) dedicated to the 11 communities within the borough for capital projects and improvements . Through 2021 Red Dog has paid $ 49 million into the VIF which the NAB has distributed to the villages .
What minerals are mined from Red Dog ?
Red Dog produces zinc and lead , which are metals critical for society and the green economy , while also providing for shareholders and the region .
How much money does the State of Alaska make from the mine ?
Through 2018 , the State of Alaska and other government agencies have received more than $ 1.3 billion in payments through the Alaska Mining License Tax , corporate income tax and payments to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority for the use of the DeLong Mountain Transportation System and port .

NANA Trespass Program Kicks-Off New Season

The 2022 NANA Trespass Program kicked off on Aug . 1 with training for the resource protection officers ( RPOs ) in Kotzebue . NANA aims to hire two officers per village to patrol lands . The trespass program is NANA ’ s best way of ensuring that hunters and other non-shareholder individuals are not trespassing , negatively impacting , or acting illegally on NANA lands .

RPOs undergo a week-long training to receive their certification and begin patrolling by boat and ATV . This year officers will also be doing aerial patrol where there is high traffic on rivers and portages during peak hunting season . RPOs work with the National Park Service , Selawik National Wildlife Refuge , the Bureau of Land Management and the Alaska State Troopers to investigate any concerns or reports .
Though the RPOs are patrolling , they rely on reports from residents . Their contact information will be shared in each community for residents to call in concerns . We encourage you to reach out to your local RPO if you see suspicious activity . Photographs are helpful when reporting what you saw .
