NANA Hosts Alaska Delegates for ICC General Assembly

The 14th Inuit Circumpolar Council ( ICC ) General Assembly was a hybrid event this year . Delegates convened regionally and sub-regionally throughout Alaska , Canada , Greenland and Russia and connected across national borders virtually . NANA hosted a part of the Alaska delegation in its Anchorage offices . Northwest Alaska delegates and some alternates convened at the Northwest Arctic Borough Assembly Chambers .

ICC holds a general assembly every four years at which delegates from across the circumpolar region elect a new chair and an executive council , develop policies and adopt resolutions that will guide the activities of the organization for the coming term .
Kasaŋnaaluk Marie N . Greene is the new ICC-Alaska president and ICC international executive council vice-chair . Nicole Kanayurak Wojciechowski is the vice president of ICC-Alaska and an ICC international executive council member . Qaulluq Liz Cravalho is the NANAappointed ICC-Alaska board member and Saagulik Elizabeth Hensley is the alternate .
The theme of “ Inuit – Strength and Peace ” was chosen to reflect the strength Inuit have even throughout a global coronavirus pandemic . Over the course of three days the 66 Inuit delegates heard presentations on : future on international partnerships ; international Indigenous human rights and international partnerships ; food security ; families and youth ; health and wellness ; education and language ; and Indigenous knowledge .
The delegates adopted a declaration to guide the work of ICC International and each ICC National office for the next four years .

Sara Olsvig was unanimously elected as the new chair , taking over from Alaska ’ s Dr . Dalee Sambo Dorough .
Founded in 1977 under the leadership of the late Eben Hopson of Barrow , Alaska , the ICC has flourished and grown into a major international non-government organization representing approximately 180,000 Inuit of Alaska , Canada , Greenland and Chukotka ( Russia ). The organization holds Consultative Status II at the United Nations .
To thrive in their circumpolar homeland , Inuit had the vision to realize they must speak with a united voice on issues of common concern and combine their energies and talents towards protecting and promoting their way of life . The principal goals of ICC are , therefore , to strengthen unity among Inuit of the circumpolar region ; promote Inuit rights and interests on an international level ; develop and encourage long-term policies that safeguard the Arctic environment ; and seek full and active partnership in the political , economic and social development of circumpolar regions .
