Celebrating NANA ’ s 50th Anniversary

A Look at the 1970s

NANA officially opened for business on July 1 , 1972 , with three employees : John Schaeffer Jr ., executive director ; Jimmy Gregg , deputy director ; and Lena McClellen ( Lincoln ), secretary . They began organizing the corporation and commencing work on land selection .

NANA was formed after the U . S . Congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act ( ANCSA ) on Dec . 18 , 1971 .
In 1973 , NANA had nine employees . John Schaeffer Jr . and Jimmy Gregg were joined by Willie Goodwin , director of lands ; R . Robert Sams , finance and accounting ; Rachel Craig , administrative assistant ; Darlene “ Red ” Seeberger , executive secretary ; Nellie Boswell , secretary ; Ruth Ferguson , accounting clerk ; and Walter Sampson , assistant lands director .
By 1975 , according to that year ’ s annual report , NANA had grown to 300 employees . “ Our employees are proud to work for NANA which has a reputation in Alaska ’ s business community of honesty , integrity and quality service ,” said John Schaeffer Jr . “ The key to our success is that we know who we are , where we came from and where we want to go .”
“ There is much yet to be done ,” said Schaeffer , “ but I am confident that together we will accomplish our goals .”
NANA is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year . Check our Facebook page through the rest of this year for more stories about NANA ’ s history and milestones .
