Message from the President & CEO
Dear Shareholders ,
NANA officially opened for business on July 1 , 1972 . We began our operations with three employees and 4,900 original shareholders . We owe much to our early leaders , who worked hard to protect the rights of our people and set NANA on a 50-year path to our success today .
We have lost many of those leaders over the years , most recently with the passing of board member Alasuk Charlie Curtis . Alasuk was a former president and CEO of NANA and served on the board for many NANA companies . Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie ’ s family .
Aġnaaqłuk John Lincoln , NANA president and CEO , at the NANA Anchorage office .
For many years , Ikaaq Roland Booth Sr . has served NANA and its people . He was one of NANA ’ s original board members , retiring from the board in 2010 after 38 years of service before becoming the board ’ s Elder advisor . We wish him a long and happy retirement .
Elders like Alasuk and Ikaaq kept us grounded in working together for the greater good of all our families and loved ones . The more I learn about the history of NANA and experience the rigors of being in a leadership role here , the more
I appreciate the challenges , sacrifice and achievements of those who came before us
NANA has grown from 4,900 shareholders in 1972 to more than 15,000 in 2022 . During that time , we have grown from three employees to more than 11,000 . NANA is now a large business , but our mission continues — to improve the quality of life for our people .
And now , a new generation of shareholders must prepare to lead NANA . We must be willing to work as hard as our Elders before us . We must learn about the challenges facing our people , have a strong voice in economic development on our lands , and protect our language , culture and environment . We must understand and live our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat values . We want to carry the legacy of our Elders forwards .
More than 40 shareholders applied to fill Alasuk ’ s at-large seat on the board . It is good to see that shareholders are stepping up and offering their services to their fellow shareholders .
We also celebrate our young people ; you can see some of this year ’ s graduates on NANA ’ s social media and in the pages of The Hunter . You ’ ll read about Akima ’ s summer interns and the students who participated in the second year of the GeoFORCE geology academy in Alaska , Arizona and Utah .
In this issue , you will learn about the many ways NANA is working for you . The first of our village office buildings , built by NANA Construction , is now in Deering being furnished and equipped . We have an aggressive schedule to build a NANA office in every village , with four scheduled for next summer , four for the summer of 2024 and the last finished in summer 2025 .
In this fall ’ s informal shareholder meetings , I hope to see many of you as we share NANA ’ s progress and hear from you about how NANA can make a difference for you , your family and your community . We will be celebrating NANA ’ s 50th anniversary and the people who helped make the vision of NANA a reality .
We have much work ahead of us , and I am excited about NANA ’ s future . Together as shareholders , we can look forward to the next 50 years .
Taikuu ,

Informal Meeting Dates
NANA plans to hold informal shareholder meetings in person this year for the first time since 2019 . NANA holds annual informal shareholder meetings in the 11 regional communities , Anchorage , Fairbanks and Seattle . These meetings are required in communities with open board seats to nominate candidates . The meetings also provide shareholders with NANA ' s unaudited financial information through July 31 . NANA ’ s management team will review programs and projects completed or underway during the fiscal year to date . The meetings are also a chance for shareholders to make comments and ask questions .
This year we are looking forward to celebrating NANA ’ s 50th anniversary , with food , door prizes and recognition of Elders at the informal meetings .
