Akima Hosts Shareholder Awareness Month
2024 Summer Internship Program
This July , Akima sponsored its fourth Shareholder Awareness Month . This annual event uses the month of July to educate Akima ’ s employees and customers about the NANA region , NANA shareholders and NANA culture .
This year , the theme of the month was “ Life in the NANA Region .” To highlight the region , Akima released weekly videos featuring our shareholder summer interns reflecting on their heritage and culture . In addition , signage around all Akima offices featured information about each of the NANA region communities , an interactive online map , a mug for each employee highlighting NANA ’ s core principles and weekly trivia contests .
All employees look forward to learning more about our shareholders each year , but our shareholders also find it meaningful . Marita Ticket , a shareholder intern from Selawik , summed it up this way , “ Thank you for making space for shareholders to share their outlooks and experiences and for providing opportunities for others to learn about it and learn about the region and the people of NANA . Thank you for taking a whole month to show it to Akima employees and share it . It means a lot .”
During Akima ’ s Shareholder Awareness Month , employees are given the opportunity to learn more about NANA shareholders and our region . l-r : Mark Schuerch , Anchorage ; Aly Allison , Anchorage ; Marilyn Sheldon , Ambler ; Lexus Smith , Anchoraga ; Akima CEO Bill Monet ; Marita Ticket , Selawik ; Samantha Osborne , Anchorage ; Katherine Jones , Ambler ; Akima director of shareholder programs Mamie Karmun . This summer , Akima hosted eight shareholder interns working in Herndon , Virginia and Huntsville , Alabama . These internships provide valuable real-world experience and help build professional networks that can significantly benefit the interns as they enter the job market . Gaining hands-on experience and making connections in their chosen fields are key advantages that can set them up for success after graduation .
Akima ' s internship program began in 2005 with the first shareholder intern at Akima Management Services ( AMS ) out of Charlotte , North Carolina .
Since then , nearly 200 shareholder interns have gone through an internship at Akima . " They gain valuable office work experience , and they get to know professionals in many different fields ," says Mamie Karmun , director of shareholder programs . " A lot of them have never worked in an office — they ' re learning the technology , office etiquette , how to interact with a team , how to collaborate on a work project and more ." Mamie is a NANA shareholder who is originally from Deering and now works for Akima in Herndon , Virginia . She understands what it ’ s like to transition from living in a regional community to working in a corporate setting in a large city , which makes her an excellent support system for shareholders participating in the internship program .
Mamie began supporting this program in 2009 when she saw an IT intern who didn ' t have anything to do in the after-work hours . " I started inviting him whenever our family would do anything on the weekends , and since then , I ' ve been involved ," she says . Over time , she grew the program and added structure by asking various departments and teams to plan weekend outings and hospitality for the interns . Today , during their free time , interns have a chance to explore the local communities where they ’ re working , including visiting local sights and attractions .
About 20 % of the shareholder interns have returned to work full-time at Akima or one of its operating companies . Others have advanced to leadership roles , joined the NANA board of directors , pursued master ’ s degrees , and more . Additionally , 25 % of Akima ’ s shareholder employees began their careers as Akima interns .
