NWALT Advocates in Washington , D . C ., for Regional Priorities

The Northwest Arctic Leadership Team , or NWALT , made a successful trip to Washington D . C . in early June , meeting with the Alaska congressional delegation and other elected officials to educate them about our region , priorities and challenges the region is facing and what can be done to help local families and communities .

NWALT is a partnership between Maniilaq Association , NANA Regional Corporation , the Northwest Arctic Borough and
the Northwest Arctic Borough School District to maximize resources and reduce duplication of efforts to address issues affecting the people of northwest Alaska .
Over the course of three days , NWALT members met with agency leaders at the Department of Education , Department of the Interior , Indian Health Service , Department of Transportation , and Department of State . Additionally , NWALT met with Rep . Mary Peltola , Sen . Dan Sullivan , Sen . Lisa Murkowski , and
officials from the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs . Key topics discussed include Maniilaq ’ s Behavioral Health Crisis Stabilization Center project , Alaska Technical Center Family Housing project , Cape Blossom Port planning , and the economic sustainability of the region which impacts each NWALT organization .
While in the nation ’ s capital , NWALT leaders applauded the decision by the U . S . Supreme Court upholding key provisions of the Indian Child Welfare Act . The
law was enacted in 1978 to require states to keep Indigenous children in need of aid connected with their families and Tribes rather than continuing the devastating practice of removing children from their communities .
For more than 20 years , NWALT has worked together to elevate our region ’ s priorities to state and federal leaders , while honoring and perpetuating our Iñupiat heritage .
NWALT leaders visit Sen . Lisa Murkowski . NANA President and CEO John Lincoln with Rep . Mary Peltola .
