The Qikiqtaġruq Northern Lights Dancers perform at Qatŋut 2019.
The “Iñupiaraaqta” app was a project of the Iñupiaq Language Commission and supported by NANA
and Maniilaq Association. The Iñupiaq Language Commission is responsible for guiding Iñupiaq
language revitalization initiatives in the region. “Iñupiaraaqta!” means “Let’s Speak Iñupiatun!”
For centuries, Qikiqtaġruk was a trading center due to its central
location at the confluence of several rivers. Every two years, Qatŋut
celebrates this history. For three days, Qikiqtaġruk welcomes dance
groups from Utqiaġvik, Wainwright and King Island—as well as
the Qikiqtaġruk Northern Lights Dancers from Kotzebue and the
Napaaqtuġmiut Dancers from Noatak. Do you have a
story, photos or
comments for us?
Contests during Qatŋut include fish cutting, maktak eating, niqipiaq,
nallukkataq (blanket toss) and other Iñupiaq games. Contact [email protected]
and let us know.
NANA is proud to be a sponsor of Qatŋut, and we thank all the
participants, volunteers and contributors.
