A Christmas Tradition
NANA shareholder Marcus Muniqsuk Hanna collected 55 pounds of candy, donated by NANA employees. The candy allowed Marcus to fulfill his requirement to“ provide service to help a place of worship,” for his Fellowship of God Venture with the Cub Scout Bear Pack 11. This candy will be given to the Kotzebue Friends Church to be distributed at the close of the Christmas program in the form of goodie bags.

the church gives each attendee a brown paper bag filled with popcorn, hard candies, nuts and / or raisins. It was always a special treat because the items were not always readily available year-round. Every household would also receive a can of fruit as a Christmas present from the church. The tradition is still practiced today but they now include a piece of fresh fruit in the goodie bags.
Muniqsuk is in the 3rd grade and is the son of Lawrence and Lori Hanna, grandson of Lena Hanna of Kotzebue, and Ellen and the late Jim Lane of Anchorage. ■

Anchorage NANA staff donated candy so that Marcus’ s can receive his“ Fellowship and Duty to God adventure” patch. The candy will be donated to the Kotzebue Friends Church where they hand out over 1,000 goodie bags to attendees. |

Taking Care of Each Other
As Iñupiaq, we share with those in need. The Noatak Wellness Committee, a group comprised of local entities like NANA, Maniilaq, the Native Village of Noatak, Noatak Youth Leaders, and community volunteers, recently hosted a Thanksgiving dinner delivery for Elders who are widows / widowers.
“ It was great to see the smiles on the Elders faces,” NANA Shareholder Relations Coordinator, Dawn Schaeffer said.“ Some Elders even gave thanks and were grateful to us over the VHF [ very high frequency radio ].”
Volunteers cooked and donated turkey, gravy, stuffing, goulash, mashed potatoes, bread, pumpkin pie, cake and berry jello. Twenty-five meals complete with dessert were delivered within the community. ■
Wellness Committee members( not all pictured) Dawn Schaeffer, Tanya Kirk, Pauline Mills, Mary Adams, Lucy Hall, Stella Shy, Eva Onalik, Karen Mitchell, and Robbie Kirk prepared and plated the food.
Twenty-five turkey dinners and desserts were distributed amongst the community of Noatak.
