When you hear about drunk drivers, it is never imagined that you yourself could be so reckless. But the reality is that individuals are willingly driving their cars after drinking and the results are fatal. For example a mother ran a red light and crashed with her three children in the vehicle, all while being intoxicated, according to KSAT 12 news. If an adult mother, with obligations to life she carried , and a community she was apart of was not mature enough to know her limits, then it is naive for society to believe teenagers are not making the mistake to drive while under the influence. Teenagers need to be aware that it is not okay to drive after they have consumed alcohol, even if it feels like they are okay to drive. Everyone is aware that driving while you have been drinking is risky, but when they have only a few drinks they feel like they are able to operate a vehicle, but the plain and simple facts are that “alcohol does affect your coordination”, says alcohol problems and solutions. Alcohol increases the chances of a car accident happening, therefore increasing the likelihood of injury or death.

Teens are going to drink, that is inevitable, however if they are tooled with the right information they can make smart choices to not endanger them or innocent bystanders.

Another example of an accident caused by drunk driving is when a 17 year old crashed his vehicle with four other classmates, sadly resulting in the death of one individual and critical injury of another. The driver who was not injured was then “charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated and two counts of DUI causing great and bodily injury” (CBS8.com). The high school senior with his whole life ahead of him, lost everything in an instant, including the glory of San Diego Hall of Champions. The teens blood account count was .10%, .2 higher than the limit for 21 year olds and over.

In Texas if a 21 year old’s Blood Alcohol Concentration, known as B.A.C., is 0.08% or above you have surpassed the DWI limits. If a 21 year cannot drive with a B.A.C. of 0.08% than kids should not attempt to drive anywhere while under the influence of alcohol.
