CONNECTING

I was the kid in school whose art always looked like I was taking an entirely different class than everyone else ' s . I got lots of " good effort ,” but almost all examples of my childhood school drawings feature a first attempt madly scribbled out on the back side . I couldn ’ t every seem to make a pencil , crayon or paintbrush do what I wanted it to do .
It was a bit surprising , therefore , that I was the one urging my daughters to try a paint night with me last spring ..
Our artist that night told us that we could veer " off script " at any time , or completely - if we wanted to paint a cat instead , we could paint a cat . That made me feel loads better . She walked us through each stage - take this brush , use this colour , go like this across this area of the canvas . Then , within each stage , she gave us little hints like " if you want it lighter do this , if darker , do that .”
I ended up with a painting that I was happy to hang on my wall . More than a painting , though , I ended up with a few more things .
The first was some serious insight into my daughters ’ personalities . Each of them forged ahead insistent on finding ways to make their painting ‘ different .’ They were willing to follow the ‘ rules ’ but still sought to find a way to put their individual stamp on the night .
Meanwhile , I learned that the ability to conform in certain settings has become important to me . I was thrilled with myself for reproducing something that looked like the display example - I could follow instructions .
For me , that was two lessons learned in one night , and just one more example of how my learning experience continues . Whether it ’ s a return to university , or college , or a single painting workshop , I soak up opportunities to learn whenever I can .
All , in all , as the school year begins - whether in fact or in feeling - we hope you ’ ll continue to seek out lessons wherever the may appear and take joy in the exchange of knowledge and ideas we try to foster here at The Hub . Have a great month !
There are many things that unite us as Windsorites . Our riverfront , our experience of living in close proximity to Detroit , our roots as the automotive capital of Canada and now our common bond as the witnesses to two tornados to come across our region in one day . August 24 will become a date marked in our collective consciousness , as June 6 , 2010 has if you happened to live in Leamington . There ' s no denying that many communities can claim a similar distinction , some with much more frequency and severity than ours but one would have to reach as far back as April 3 , 1974 to remember a similar occurrence . " It came out of the blue ," said many of those that sustained the largest damage . That is perhaps , what sums up our shock the best . We all know that Essex County is no stranger to a good storm . But tornados are not something we ' re accustomed to .
Like all times of trial , this one was is no different . We grieve and we tell our stories as we continue to clean up and carry on . We ' re tough like that . Whether it ' s a devastating storm , a crippling round of layoffs , a plant closure or tragic accident , we ' ve learned to remind ourselves that we ' ll live through this too . We check on our neighbours , we offer a helping hand , we stop at Tim ’ s for extra coffee and pay for the ones that are next in line too . This is what Windsorites do . While we learn from the past we also look forward and make a distinct effort to embrace the present . Check out Be Prepared on page 22 to be ready the next time Mother Nature kicks up her heels .
