Joining a sorority was the last thing on my mind when I started university. I hadn’t owned pink
clothing since I was about seven years old, and my time was most preferably spent either in
solitude, curled up with a good book or outside, tossing a softball with my sisters. But in 2007,
I was heading into the Communications program at the University of Windsor, and all of my
friends were going into something different. Faced with being alone in my classes, having no
sports to play outside of school and a constant drive to DO something, I was convinced to join
Delta Alpha Theta Sorority by a high school chum. Though we are no longer close, her pleading
with me to join this organization changed my life.
In fact, ultimately my actual sisters also joined a
sorority at their university. But there’s a lot of
misconceptions and misinformation out there
about fraternities and sororities. If any of us
Haggert girls had bought into the myths, we might never
have checked it out, and we’d have missed
out on an important experience. With the
beginning of a new school year, and rush
season approaching,
here’s a rundown of
the fictions and
facts.
