The Hub October 2013 | Page 4

CONNECTING Several years ago, I recall watching my daughter and niece at a school track meet. “You know,” I remarked to my brother, who was watching with me. “I have to give them credit. I’m not sure I’d run toward water if I was on fire.” The running craze, then, is something that’s continued to puzzle me. I admire the dedication of runners I know, and any kind of physical exercise is a positive, but the joy many claim to find in running has always eluded me. However, writer Rick Dawes makes a great case for the past-time in this issue – I’m almost persuaded and hope you will be too! And that’s the whole idea behind The Hub. As we put our fourth issue out, I’m tickled at how we’ve met our goal of introducing topics of conversation and ways to connect the community with new ideas, interests and people. One of the most exciting developments? For some people, The Hub is the very first magazine they’ve read on their computer, tablet or smartphone. So we’re connecting people with a whole new way of enjoying magazines too; I think that’s pretty cool! If I do manage to give running a try this fall, I’ve already decided I’m going to run by one of our local bakeries and reward myself with a cupcake. Writer Sean Previl did the same for The Hub (it’s possible he walked) and tells you all about the cupcake craze taking sweet-lovers by storm. On the same run, I’ll pass down Ottawa Street and admire its new polish; Jolene Perron makes it sound so inviting! And depending on where my run takes me, I may discover even more historic buildings that have been given new life with new purpose, as Rick Dawes highlights for us. Speaking of trying something new - have you tried all the features of our magazine? Our ads are clickable - they’ll take you right to the advertiser’s Facebook page or website. And our multimedia links enhance our stories with audio, video or additional info. Give them a try! Who said back to school meant back to routine? Just because summer’s over, there’s no reason to stop exploring, experiencing and enjoying all Windsor-Essex has to offer. I’m game if you are – though it might be done at a leisurely walk instead of a brisk jog. ! Shelley No matter how they dress it, fall is still the first cousin to winter and no one can convince me otherwise. It may be the gentler, friendlier, more colourful relative but the family resemblance is unmistakable. On the bright side, this is the time of year when I feel most thankful. Because of the knowledge that the crazy and sometimes lazy days of summer are behind us, I feel sentimental about all things bright and carefree. The prospect of cozy sweaters and fuzzy socks may cushion the blow, but my awareness of waning sunlight and temperatures that struggle to remain above zero builds an awareness of the inevitability of change. It’s not very surprising, then, that this is the time of year when we celebrate Thankgiving. Like that cool and aloof cousin that we only see once a year, I welcome the approaching winter with a grudging acceptance; anxious about the time we’ll spend together but hopeful that maybe it will be different this year. Appropriate to the season, in this issue we take a look at what has been, what is and the possibility of what can be. Many of us know about the therapeutic power of running. If it’s not you or a family member, chances are good that ???????????????????????????????????)??????Q?????????????????????????????????????????????????)?????????Q???????????????????????????????????????)????????????????????????????????????????????????????)?????????]????????????????????????????????????????????????)Q????????????????????????????????????=????M??????????????)????????????????????????????????????????????????????????)??????????????????????????????????????%?????????????????????)???????????????????????????????????????????????????????)????????????????e???????????????????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????????)??????????????Q??????????????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????????????e????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????)!???????????e?????????????????????()?()5?????????????)A?????????????????????)?????????????????)??????????????????()???????)M?????????????!??????() ?????????)???????????????????!??????)5???????!?????????????????????))??????A??????M????A????)A?????Y??????????5???????Y???)]????????? ?????!?????U???() ??????]???U?)??????????????????)?????????????????????????)Q??!?]((?Q???!U???=?????????() ???????????)Q???]???M????U??%?????)????????????????%???)9?????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????)???????????????????????()Q???!?????????????????????????Q??)]???M????U??%??????????????????????%???)????????????????????????Q???!????????)????????????????????????????????)????????]????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????)???????????Q????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????)?????????]?????????????????????????)??????????????????????????????????)?????????????????????((0
