your entrepreneurial spirit. For every home-based
web developer there’s a home-based accountant
willing to keep an eye on your books and send out
your invoices in a timely fashion. Likewise,
book-keepers and bakers may find it convenient to
have someone else take care of their marketing and
promotion efforts.
Entrepreneurs do have to be highly motivated,
and not averse to risk or rejection. There is no one
telling you when to report to “the office” and a slow
period may leave you feeling as though you’re doing
something wrong. If illness, injury or crisis leaves you
unable to run things for a time, there is little in the
way of a financial safety net, although some
voluntary coverage through Employment Insurance
is now available. Medical, dental and other benefits
don’t exist. And while you can take a vacation when
you want, it will probably require you shutting down
operations for a while, which means no income.
But for people like McDonald - and us at The Hub
- the benefits are worth it.
“It’s very freeing,” says McDonald. “The whole
family gets involved, and it’s wonderful to see Parker
dancing and singing around the kitchen while I
work.” She looks forward to the day when Honey Bee
is once again a full time venture. “I don’t want to live
around my work,” she says. “I want to work around
my life.”
