CONNECTING
Many of my childhood summer days were spent on a backyard swing
set, climbing, flipping and jumping from its crossbars, rings and swings. In
fact, I think I did everything but swing on it. And I can distinctly
remember trying, repeatedly, to transform a flaccid skipping rope into
something that would be the foundation for a high wire walking act.
It’s no wonder, then, that my eyes lit up and I squealed like a kid
when I heard the news about Windsor Circus School coming to the
downtown core. Trapeze classes! For grownups! I couldn’t help but want to
learn more.
It looks like circus school is going to be a great addition to a growing
downtown - and I sincerely hope that we’ll see some participation from
them when the Downtown Windsor Farmers Market reopens too. It
doesn’t take great leaps of imagination to think about what this venture
could mean to the downtown area and the city as a whole.
On the other end of the spectrum, it’s also exciting to be celebrating a
half-century of St. Clair College in our community. Most Hubsters know
that I also teach there; the significance of the 50-year milestone is front
and centre on campus in 2017. Students, faculty, alumni and supporters
are enthusiastically carrying out activities and special events weekly. I’m
looking forward to seeing what the big Homecoming weekend this month
adds to our fregion.
And spring has finally arrived, with tulips blooming and trees
budding. There are still some chilly days here and there, but once those
garden centre tents have sprung up, there’s only one way forward. Luckily,
thanks to dozens of community groups that pitched in over the Earth Day
weekend, many of our neighbourhoods are tidied up and ready for their
summer looks.
So whether you’re leaping through the air, throwing a tassled cap
toward the sky or getting ready to plant that veggie garden, I’m hoping
you’ll make the most of the season. Windsor-Essex is a great place to be in
the spring. We’ll see you in June!
It's May and there's so much to celebrate. If the never-ending
preparations for Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations and Windsor's
125th birthday weren't enough, we have many more reasons to look
forward to May. The arrival of the Memorial Cup to the City of Windsor
marks the first time our city has had the honour of hosting this
prestigious tournament. Mind you, it's only our privilege to play host but
we'll have to fight the fight to claim the cup as our own. Check out this
month's Exploring Matters to get the details of what's happening when
and where.
If St. Clair College is your alma mater, you'll want to be a part of the
celebrations to mark its 50th anniversary. From its humble beginnings to
the major educational presence it plays in our community today, it owes its
accomplishments to its leaders as well as the community that supported
its growth throughout the decades. Read about its journey from 1967 to
the present and its plans for the future on pg. 10 and head out to
participate in the many activities it has planned.
And, if running away with the circus has always been your fantasy,
you'll now only have to run as far as downtown Windsor to make that
ambition a possibility. From high flying trapeze acts to tight wire walking,
dreams such as these no longer have to be relegated to unattainable
childhood fantasies. Whether you're looking to join Cirque du Soleil or just
have a fun night out with the gang, the iconic Chelseabuilding on Pelissier
St. welcomes you.
As always, our calendar of events is there to help you discover your
community day after day. Check it out, mark your calendars and let us
know what you stumbled upon during the month of May.
