Meconi says those are extremely rare. “We get one every 20 years,” said Meconi. “And we have some very, very talented players here.” Back at Super Bowl, pro shop manager Steven Scherle is tucked away in a tiny workroom, using a giant drill to put holes into a bowling ball. Each ball is 27 inches in circumference but weighs anywhere between six and 16 pounds. They can’t weigh any more. “Even though some bowling balls will come in at 16 pounds, four ounces, they have to be drilled down to 16,” said Scherle, who has bowled since he was six years old and has run the pro shop at Super Bowl for three years. “There’s a legality. You can allow only an ounce either side, an ounce finger or thumb weight and three ounces top or bottom. You have to use what’s called a dodo scale to weigh it out, or you might need a balance hold to make it legal.” Scherle custom fits the holes on each new ball specifically for the customer.
