there might be problems,” says Little. “But it hasn’t happened.
The biggest challenge is that sometimes it gets really full.”
One of the centre’s members tries to monitor the library and
make sure it’s maintained.
“We have had no vandalism or theft,” says Green. “My
main concern has been ensuring that there aren't too many
books showing up.”
Little Free Libraries also give designers the chance to be
creative. If you look closely, you can see that some in our area
are actually recycled newspaper boxes. Others have been
lovingly crafted from wood and other recycled materials, and
painted with fun and colourful designs. On the Little Free
Library website, you can find plans for building your own, and
hundreds of photographs that librarians have submitted of
their projects. Service groups may build them and sell them as
a way of raising funds, or community groups may come
together to build one for their neighbourhood. Many
homeowners have taken it a step further, not only adding a
library to their front yard but also a decorative bench for those
who’d like to take time out and read.
As simple as these projects are, they also carry a modern
element. Many Little Free Libraries have their own Facebook
page or Twitter account, and people come together over social
media to discuss their literary finds, their ideas and their
challenges. The original website features a world map and
appendix showing the locations of registered projects around
the globe.
At its root, though, the motivations and ideas behind the
movement are simple. Take a book, leave a book. Share a book.
“It's a way to decentralize and make it an open free space,
place, and activity,” says Green. “No one owns it. No one runs
it. It is a community enriching moneyless system of sharing
knowledge. “
