The Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie By Alan Bradley Flavia DeLuce is no ordinary 11-year-old. She has a passion for mystery, chemistry and exploring the countryside surrounding the English estate she lives in with her melancholy father and two disagreeable sisters. It doesn't help that bodies keep popping up around the village and everyone including the constable seems unable to put two and two together. With the help of the cook, gardener and a whole cast of well-rounded characters, she's the first in line to snoop out the truth about what may be going on, usually right under everyone's noses. What started as a charming book about a smart, curious and energetic girl on the hunt for the truth has developed into a fine series that will be of interest to those who like an old-fashioned mystery a la Agatha Christie. At last count there were seven, but start with the first, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, for a fine introduction to Flavia and company. You have all summer to read all seven and something tells me you'll be doing just that. - Eva Antonel, Editor The Omnivore’s Dilemma By Michael Pollan Summer, with its farmers’ markets and backyard gardens, is an excellent time to learn more about the foods we eat, and how, and why. From factory farms to hunting and gathering, Pollan takes the reader on an exploratory journey that left me wanting to know far more about my food options than I had in the past. I’m not prepared to say my eating habits will change - but I am willing to say I’m giving a lot more thought to the traditions and trends that motivate my meals. - Shelley Divnich Haggert, Editor Stonehenge By Bernard Cornwell If you read one book this summer, make it this one. I've read this book at least once a year for the last few years and it never ceases to amaze me, and I find some new hidden element of the story every time. Based on you guessed it - the prehistoric time when Stonehenge would have been created, the first time I read this novel the copy had no cover and I got 60 per cent through it before I realized, "Oh, wow! They're talking about Stonehenge!" Told as an epic drama of relationships, enduring against all odds, Cornwell's novel hides a history lesson in its pages. I couldn't put it down ! If you like Game of Thrones, this is definitely on your summer reading list. - Angelica Haggert, Writer If You Only Knew By Kristan Higgins Perfect for fans of romance and light beach reads, this novel about two sisters will tickle your funny bone, ignite your indignation and sting your tear ducts. Witty, loveable characters, true-to-life situations and a satisfying ending. Hits shelves this August. - Alex Antonel, Proofreader What Are You Reading?
