If the chilly temps have you looking for something to do indoors,
come on downtown and visit an amazing building which houses two
museums that offer something for everyone.
The Chimczuk Museum is Windsor’s beautiful community
museum. It occupies the first floor of the 401 Riverside Dr. W which
is across from the Aquatic Centre. The space is divided into galleries
which host permanent and travelling exhibitions. Gallery One hosts
“The River and the Land Sustain Us” which tells the history of our
city and people. It’s both fun and fascinating and is suitable for
children of all ages. It’s also a perfect tourist activity for first time or
infrequent visitors to Windsor. The Children’s Gallery and Learning
Space is a large area with numerous (bilingual) interactive activities
for children of all ages. There is also an Original Peoples’ Culture and
Legacy Gallery reflecting the culture and heritage of the local First
Nations and Métis communities. The travelling galleries host three to
four exciting exhibitions per year. The newest is “Cursive Writing:
Reading and Writing the Old School Way” from London, Ontario. It’s
expected to be very popular as parents and educators work hard to
dispel the myth that children don’t need to learn handwriting in the
era of digital devices. Not so! Cursive writing engages our brains,
improves fine motor dexterity, and in particular gives children a better
idea of how words work in combination. Large group (retirement
homes, clubs, and associations) and school tours are most welcome
and can be arranged by contacting the museum.
The renowned Art Gallery of Windsor, established in 1943, has
changed locations several times but has never lost its special place in
the hearts of the residents of Windsor-Essex. The Gallery now
occupies the second and third floors of 401 Riverside Dr. W. When
your enjoyable tour of the Chimczuk has ended, the fun and delight
continue an elevator ride away. While the AGW continues to have the
ongoing “Look Again! Celebrating the AGW Collection” on display,
there are also a number of creative and interesting activities for both
adults and children. Examples include Yoga in the Gallery, Sip and
Swirl Paint Classes, artist panel discussions and outreach programs
with community partners, and school programs such as Math at the
Gallery all add up to make the AGW a valuable creative resource for
the community. There is always something new and different at the

gallery, such as Canadian female artist Megan Hyckie’s beautiful and
arresting coloured pencil work “War Time Houses”. When you go,
pay special attention to the “ArtFit” exhibits and information. These
displays combine the sensory experience of art with physical fitness.
It’s a truly innovative initiative that provides ideas as to how to blend
art and fitness for improved health of mind and body. The AGW also
welcomes tours and venue rental inquiries.
The Chimczuk and the AGW offer joint admission ticketing to
make visits to 401 Riverside Dr. W. easy and affordable. Both museums
also have annual individual and family membership packages which
come with unique benefits and opportunities to experience the
museums at a deeper level.
